Athrun Zala (Gundam SEED)
Jump to: Biography | Image Gallery
Japanese Name: Athrun Zala When little Athrun was about four or five, he lived on the moon. (Wow, that sounds weird.) Anyway, there, he went to school, and he met another kid his age named Kira Yamato. Despite their completely different personalities, they became best friends, and stayed very close for maybe six or seven years afterward (they might have given the exact year, but I missed it). At that time, he was called from the moon to go to PLANT, the big Coordinator dwelling in space, by his father, who was a high-ranking official in ZAFT (Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty). Just before he left, he created a little green robot-bird called Tori (such an imaginative name), and gave it to Kira, assuring him that there wouldn't be a war between PLANT and the Earth, and also inviting him to go join him at PLANT some day. Well, that was the last meeting of Kira and Athrun. Between then and the time that Gundam SEED takes place, quite a few things happen to Athrun... As said, he moved to the PLANT, and no one knows what he did there for a few years (probably just went to school, that's not very interesting). But 11 months before the events of Gundam SEED, there was the "chi no Valentine" - Valentine of blood. It was a nuclear attack by the Naturals, and it hit one of those spiral-things of PLANT. Athrun's mother, Lenore Zala, was killed in the attack. Hearing about this, Athrun was horrified and decided to join the military, so that he could help to prevent that kind of thing from ever happening again. In the 11 months that follow, he rises to the rank of elite pilot (red uniform), and then he goes to Heliopolis to get the Mobile Suits that ZAFT had heard they were making over there. The five elite pilots split up so that Athrun and Rusty went for the two Mobile Suits that were separate from the other three. However, in the gunbattle with the guards of the area Rusty was killed, and Athrun, seeing this and in a sort of rage, started shooting down everything that moved, and injured Murrue Lamius in the process. Closing in on her with a knife, Athrun was about to strike when the boy who had jumped to her aid suddenly said his name, and Athrun recognized Kira... this stopped him for a split second, enough for Lamius to push herself and Kira into the Strike. Seeing that they were going to escape, Athrun jumped into the Aegis, joined up again with the other three and Miguel, giving them news of Rusty's death and the Naturals' recapture of the Strike. After watching Miguel be killed by Kira (and determining that it actually was Kira piloting the Strike) Athrun starts to become obsessed. He can't believe that his best friend, little Kira the coordinator, would actually be fighting for the Earth - and so he vows to turn Kira around and bring him to ZAFT, because he doesn't want to have to kill him. (As if he could. Kira is immortal. Well, so is Athrun.) So the first time he has to fight Kira, he attempts to grab the Strike and take it back to the Vesalius with him (majorly pissing off Yzak, who had been on the verge of killing Kira). Obviously that screws up, and Athrun and Kira meet several more times without either side being able to do any major damage. (They say that they'll kill each other the next time they meet, but neither of them actually means it.) Meanwhile Athrun is in the Vesalius, being Kruze's little favorite, and spending all of his time angsting over Kira. Nicol, being the cute little concerned person that he is, always stands there worrying about him. Then Yzak gets pissed off at him all the time because he doesn't want to kill Kira (and for other reasons which I don't feel like getting into). Dearka, the only one, doesn't bother Athrun much and just follows Yzak around. Of course, Athrun doesn't notice all this very much, because he's too concerned about how he has to kill Kira. --spoilers and the stuff afterwards-- That all changes when, while Kira is trying to get Athrun to stop fighting, poor Nicol sees them and thinks that Kira is about to kill Athrun, and so he charges in to try to "save" him... charging at the Strike (and Kira), which just happens to have that huge sword in its hands, and... swings it straight into the heart of the Blitz. Athrun, stunned and in disbelief, goes back to the main ship. After getting into another huge fight with Yzak, this time because Yzak is pissed at Athrun because he needed to find someone to blame for Nicol's death, and Athrun is pissed at Yzak because he actually blames himself and he goes crazy because Yzak is rubbing it in. After seeing Nicol's sheet music spill out of his locker, and realizing that Nicol was gone just because Athrun couldn't kill Kira, he finally resolves that the only thing left for him to do is kill Kira. So the next time they meet Athrun is in a mad, furious rage and goes in there attacking Kira mercilessly. This is the first time that we see Athrun at full power - apparently, he has the SEED, too. (The Coordinators with the SEED are some sort of hyper-Coordinators who get FAR stronger when in a dangerous situation - Berserkers, as I think Kira was referred to as at some point. We find out later that not only Kira and Athrun have the SEED thing, but Lacus and Cagalli do too - and Cagalli isn't even a Coordinator. Huh.) In any case, his eyes go that blank, blazing green color (they're pretty ^.^) and he attacks Kira, who still doesn't want to attack back... until Tolle, riding the Sky Grasper, comes to his aid. In a very similar scenario, Athrun then just flings the Aegis' shield backwards, which hits the Sky Grasper's cockpit with amazing accuracy. Tolle explodes, and Kira, seeing this, suddenly goes into the same mentality as Athrun is in. What follows is a crazed fight with Athrun yelling "Kira----!" and Kira yelling "Athrun----!" and both of them wildly attacking one another. Finally both begin to run out of power, and Athrun, noticing this, decides to end it once and for all - by self-destructing. He has the Aegis self-destruct and he ejects himself out of the cockpit and into the air so he wouldn't get caught in the explosion (though he does anyway). So, Athrun is knocked unconscious by the explosion and falls into the ocean, turning up on the beach where Cagalli finds him. He stays with her and the Orb for a little while, and then Yzak picks him up and they all go back to PLANT. There, he finds out about how Lacus became a traitor and gave the ZGMF-X10A Freedom to Kira (though he didn't know it was Kira until Lacus told him) and how he is no longer her fiance. When he finds Lacus to ask her why she did it, she tells him that she gave the Freedom to Kira, and Athrun acts sort of in denial, still convinced that he had killed Kira. Lacus questions him about what he believes in and fights for, and that, along with what Cagalli had said to him previously, convinced him to stop fighting Kira. His father gives him the ZGMF-X09A Justice so that he can destroy the Freedom, and he uses it to help Kira instead. After that... well, leaving out a few details, he joins up with the Archangel, and rejoins Kira, Dearka, and Lacus in the Orb's fight against everyone else. Attempting to talk his father out of killing all the Naturals, and failing miserably (meanwhile having to be saved by one of Lacus' faithful followers), Athrun saves PLANT several times (along with Kira) by shooting all of the nuclear missiles that the Earth's troops launch at it. He also tries to blow up Yakin-Due (the ZAFT base) by self-destructing, but Cagalli stops him from doing that; meanwhile, his father is firing the Genesis (ultra-powerful beam-thing which destroys everything in its path), trying to destroy every last one of the Naturals. It ends up not mattering; Yakin-Due blows up anyway, and everything is destroyed except for Kira, Athrun, Cagalli, the Archangel, Lacus' ship, the Orb's ship, and Yzak. There, that was everything that Athrun did for the last fifteen or so episodes of Gundam SEED. The end. For now. (That's because Athrun comes back, as a main character, in Gundam SEED Destiny which is currently being aired on Saturdays in Japan. He fights for Orb, and that's basically all that I know about his role in the next part of the series.) Link back if you take anything, please. No direct-linking or I'll do something unspeakably horrible to you. If you would like larger versions of the pictures (either manga scans or screencaps), please request them here. Screencaps |
