Knives was created onboard a ship known as Project SEEDS. He and Vash, his brother, are twins. From the beginning, Knives was more strongheaded and outspoken than Vash, and did not share Vash's love for humans, and, especially, Rem Saverem.

Knives never cared about killing, and showed this when he killed a spider to save a butterfly. He does not think the way Vash does; rather, he believes that only one can win, and to save one the other must die. His hatred for humans grew to a point where he devised a plan to destroy Project SEEDS and the people aboard, with the exception of himself, Vash, and Rem (because Vash loved her so much).

His plan did not fully succeed, however, since Rem managed to save some ships that would have went down otherwise. She did not survive, and Vash was furious with his brother when he found out that he had planned it all. The two land on a desert planet, where Knives begins to try and figure out how to destroy all the humans on it.

One day, Vash gets so fed up of Knives he shoots him in the thigh. As Knives screams in pain, Vash, terrified, runs away. After he learns that Vash has found one of Rem's relatives in July City, Knives goes there too and kills him. He then forces Vash to use his Angel Arm, destroying July City. Later on, Knives creates the Gung-ho-Guns (with Legato Bluesummers at the head) in order to torture Vash.

After Vash gets through all the Gung-ho-guns, he goes to find Knives. When he does, the two start a shooting match, and, with the help of Wolfwood's cross, Vash defeats Knives. He carries the unconscious Knives back into populated human society, and the story ends.
