Seto Kaiba and his younger brother Mokuba were born to an average family. Unfortunately, tragedy struck and his mother was killed in childbirth. His father died in an accident later, and the two boys were taken to an orphanage. When he was still young, Seto vowed to his younger brother to become his father, and to take care of him no matter what.

At the orphanage, the Kaiba brothers were miserable. Mokuba was often bullied, and it was up to Seto to sort everything out.

The boy turned out to be unusually bright, and became the chess champion of the orphanage. One day, he and Mokuba were playing chess when the television next to them broadcasted the world champion chess competition. On TV, the announcer declared Kaiba Gosaburo the world champion chess master for the sixth year in a row! He would be donating all of his prize money to charity-- the orphanage where the brothers were staying.

Gosaburo, the president of Kaiba Corporation, visited the orphanage to give the officials his prize money. As he was taking a tour of the orphanage, Seto stopped him and asked if he would adopt him and Mokuba. As the surprised Gosaburo watched the boy in amusement, Seto admitted that there would have to be terms, of course. He proposed that the two have a chess game, and that if he won Gosaburo would have to adopt him.

Knowing that he would be up against a tiny little boy, Gosaburo accepted the game. They borrowed a classroom and the chess game began, Mokuba watching worriedly. As the game proceeded, Gosaburo realized that Seto did not lack intelligence and began falling into his traps. Soon, Seto had won the game and Gosaburo adopted the two boys.

Unfortunately, life as the adopted son of a multimillionaire was hard work for the boy. Forced to study all day without any sleep, Seto soon became cold because of the treatment bestowed upon him. He never wore a smile on his face again after he had won that chess game, for which Mokuba could never forgive Gosaburo.

One particularly miserable day, Mokuba attempted to restore his brother's spirits by giving him a bunch of Duel Monster Cards along with a drawing of the Blue Eyes White Dragon. After seeing this, Seto was overjoyed and vowed to one day gain the real Blue Eyes..

Soon tiring of the treatment, Seto took over Kaiba Corporation with the help of Mokuba. Turning it from a destructive company to a peaceful one concentrated on amusement and dueling, Seto Kaiba soon became a legend-- in business and in Duel Monsters. He destroyed Alcatraz, an island under the control of Kaiba Corporation used for storing Kaiba Corp's weapons of mass destruction.

In its place, he built a huge dueling tower symbolizing his power and his destruction of Gosaburo. It became the location of the Battle City Finals.

Seto worked for years constructing a Virtual World, which he finally completed. However, one person had heard of Kaiba Corp's progress and tried to take over the company: Pegasus J. Crawford. Pegasus attempted to kidnap Seto and Mokuba with the help of the Big 5, the 5 main bosses of KC. With the help of Yugi Mutou, the Kaiba brothers were not only reunited, Pegasus dropped off the face of the Earth.

True to his word, Seto did find the true Blue Eyes White Dragon-- in fact, he did even better-- he was the proud owner of not one, but three dragons, which he used to defeat everyone who crossed him (well, almost everyone).

In an effort to destroy the fourth and last existing Blue Eyes White Dragon, Seto ripped Mutou Sugoroku's copy in half, ensuring that no one could defeat him with the legendary monster (3000/2500). This turned out to be a mistake, as in a duel with rival Mutou Yuugi, Seto was defeated by Exodia (Or, if ya want it in Japanese pronounciation, E-ku-zo-di-a).

Kaiba soon became the owner of yet another powerful card: Obelisk the Tormentor.

In the Battle City quarterfinals, he had summoned Obelisk, but in an effort to write his own destiny, he changed the future and sacrificed his Egyptian God Card to summon his pride and soul: the Blue Eyes White Dragon, defeating his opponent, Isis Ishtar, and advancing to the semifinals.

Obviously determined never to lose to an Exodia ever again, Seto managed to destroy Kaiba Gosaburo's Exodia Necros in his second trip into the Virtual World. Also in the Virtual World, Seto used his Blue Eyes to resurrect the heart of Mokuba, which had been hypnotized by Kaiba Noa.

After losing to Yugi in the Battle City Tournament semifinals, Kaiba leaves with Mokuba to America to expand Kaiba Land.
